The indicator gives the number of potential years of life lost due to death before the age of 80 per 100 000 inhabitants. The reference age corresponds to the life expectancy of the Finnish population, which is around 80 years.The potential years of life lost (PYLL) is formed by first calculating the probability of death by dividing the number of deaths in an age group with the number of people in that age group. Then, the figure is multiplied by the number of potential years of life lost (for example, a person who dies at the age 0 contributes 80 years of life lost, a person who dies at the age 20 contributes 60 years of life lost, etc.).
