The figures include persons who have been sentenced at district courts or found guilty but not sentenced (with at least one crime attributed to the person in the findings in a criminal case against the person), and who were domiciled in Finland in accordance with the Act on the municipality of domicile on the last day of the year in which they were sentenced. In addition to sentences issued at district courts, the figures for any given year may include a few sentences given at courts of appeal acting as courts of first instance. Each person is recorded in the statistics as many times as the aforementioned decisions have been made about the person in question (gross no. of persons sentenced).
