The indicator is an index calculated for all Finnish municipalities to describe the number of care periods for patients in specialised somatic health care or treatment in a rehabilitation institution in relation to the average for the country?s total population (=100). The figure is age- and sex-standardised. The indicator covers specialised somatic health care provided as hospital care in the public sector (municipalities, joint municipal boards and the state) as well as in private-sector hospitals. Hospital care includes obstetrics but not psychiatric care. The treatment periods do not include appointments in specialised outpatient care or day surgery, but indicators for these service areas are also included in Sotkanet.
