Aineisto kattaa Liikenneviraston ylläpitämän maantieverkon. Maantie voidaan tehdä moottoritieksi tai moottoriliikennetieksi liikenteen määrän ja tarjottavan palvelutason niin vaatiessa. Inventoitaessa moottoriväylien katsotaan ulottuvan sellaiseen liittymään saakka, missä hitaat ajoneuvot ja kevyt liikenne voivat siirtyä rinnakkaistielle. Moottoritie on aina 2-ajoratainen, joten se päättyy siinä, missä 2-ajorataisuuskin.
