Datamängden kommer från SVARs geodatabas vid SMHI. Version 2012_2 av SVAR sparades slutgiltigt 2012-06-04. Datamängden innehåller 713 polygoner som representerar olika havsbassängers vattenytor i Östersjön, Öresund, Bälten, Skagerrak och Kattegatt. Det finns i SVAR också ett ytskikt med havsöar sammanslaget med avrinningsområden samt ett skickt med linjerna för havsbassängernas avgränsning. Från version 2012_1 har sammanslagningar av bassänger gjorts längs svensk-norska gränsen och därav har antalet minskat från 722 till 713. För de sammanslagna bassängerna har ett antal preliminära attribut satts.
