Avrinningsområdets storlek på olika platser i vattensystemet är en grundläggande hydrologisk uppgift. Vattendelaren utgör gränsen för ett avrinningsområde och den avgör vilka markområden som påverkar vattenförhållandena i en viss punkt i vattensystemet. Vid vattenplanering och för utredningar om vattenförhållanden behövs ofta detaljerad information om avrinningsområden. Databasen delar in Sverige i 50829 delavrinningsområden. Avrinningsområden har bestämts för in- och utlopp till större sjöar, mynningen av biflöden, vattenföringsstationer med mera. Avrinningsområden har även bestämts för de vattenförekomster som rapporterat till EU i enlighet med artikel 5 i vattendirektivet.
