This rule is not valid since 2005. A change in the WHO...s coding rules has reduced pneumonia as an underlying cause since 2005. Chronic disease mentioned in the death certificate is recorded as the person's underlying cause of death instead of pneumonia. The cases mainly moved to dementia and cerebrovascular diseases. Code C97 went out of use 2005. Since 2005, codes C00-C80 include deaths due to this cause. A new code I15 was added 2005. Before 2005, codes I00-I13 included mainly deaths due to this cause.
