The indicator gives the number of deaths and death rate per 100 000 inhabitants by sex. Population figures refer to mean population. Mortality figures are non-standardised. The cause-of-death statistics cover the deaths in Finland or abroad (during the calendar year) of persons who at the time of death were residents of Finland regardless of their nationality. The statistics practically have a full coverage of deaths as the death data are verified by comparing them with data in the Population Information System. The number of deaths in the vital statistics is higher than that of the cause-of-death statistics.
