Aineisto kattaa Liikenneviraston ylläpitämän maantieverkon. Tiestö on jaettu urakka-alueisiin, joiden hoidosta vastaa aika-ajoin kilpailutettavat urakoitsijat. Jako ja sen mukainen inventointi tehdään toimistotyönä. Kulloinkin kilpailutettava aluejako suunnitellaan ja viedään tierekisteriin edellisen vuoden (xx) keväänä ennen alueurakan tietojen inventointia. Voimaantulopäivämääränä käytetään tällöin 1.10.xx + 1. Uudet koodit lisätään kilpailutettaville alueille ensin keskitetysti, jonka jälkeen Elyt hienosäätävät aluejaon syyskuun alkuun mennessä.
