Aineisto kattaa Liikenneviraston ylläpitämän maantieverkon. Kunnossapitotoiminnan tarkoituksenmukaisuus saattaa edellyttää, että Tiehallinto teettää jonkun katuosuuden hoidon ja kunta vastaavasti yleisen tien. Joskus myös VR voi olla yleisen tien pitäjä. Inventointi tapahtuu toimistotyönä. Tästä tietolajista riippumatta ilmoitetaan aina onko kyseessä virallisesti yleinen tie vai katu. Lisäksi kerrotaan hoidosta vastaava urakoitsija aina tietolajilla 312.
